Nato a Taiwan si trasferisce in Canada a soli nove anni, Jason Wu mostra da subito grande interesse per la scultura, ma impara a realizzare e cucire abiti servendosi di bambole come manichini. A poco più di 15 anni diventa creatore di una linea di abbigliamento per bambole, disegnando creazioni per l’azienda di giocattoli Integrity Toys con il marchio “Jason Wu dolls”.
Tra i suoi progetti comincia a farsi chiara l’idea di voler diventare uno stilista, continua così i suoi studi a Parigi e poi alla prestigiosa Parsons School of Design di New York. I guadagni ottenuti dalle vendite dei vestiti delle bambole gli permettono di lanciare la sua prima collezione prêt-à-porter nel 2006.
